Why do people ask what to do with obviously sick animals when the obvious answer is to take it to the vet?
Question by FantasyBookworm: Why do people ask what to do with obviously sick animals when the obvious answer is to take it to the vet?
Honestly, if you’re in doubt about your animal’s condition and it seems serious, why do people waste time getting on the computer to ask about it? Take it to an expert!

I’ve often wondered that myself. Like anyone in here is going to be able to really help.

Because they don’t want to spend the money for a vet – which is a real shame.
If you don’t have much money, go to a Petvet or low cost vet center – but get that animal to a vet whatever you do.

Because people are cheap and irresponsible.

agree 100%. Saddly some people think their animals aren’t worth the money it would cost to take them to the dr tho.

That is a very good question. I work at an Emergency Animal Hosp. We recieve hundreds of calls each week from people wanting to know how to treat very serious problems at home.Just last week I had a lady whos cat had been shot call me and want to know if she put neosporin on it would it get better.Hello….I wonder how these people take care of themselves and there children. If you cant afford to treat your sick pet – you shouldnt own one.

It’s true people get animals thinking there soo cute and can take care of them and forget how much responsibility goes into having a pet.If you can’t afford to have an animal, don’t!

some people believe that what ever the sickness is they can cure it or maybe they dont have the extra money. everyone has a reason even if it is because they are selfish.

I’ve always wondered the same thing and it makes me sick when people get on here and say they don’t have enough money to take it to the vet. Obviously they shouldn’t be owning animals if they can’t afford the vet bills. Theres just stupid irresponsible people in this world and I guess it’s always going to be like that.

Okay if its bleeding out of control or not breathing it is an emergency. However; many things are not an emergency and there are several things you can do at home.
What is a shame is the simple spaying and neutering

You are so right! People are LAZY and seem to neglect their pets needs! I mean look how many people ask q’s about their own health that would make most people wonder why they didn’t go to the Dr but want an answer on the INTERNET!!! Do you think it is just stupidity, lack of concern, laziness or money reasons?

you know this starting to annoy me as well. these poor sick animals are stuck with these stupid people who are clueless and careless. “i see my dog is sick as hell, throwing up and pooping, has no energy, bleeding…..what should i do?”
i can not stand that. these people dont deserve to care for animals.

Good question. But the answer is some of the pets may have been ill for more than a few days and in fear that the vet my be angry at them and call the humane society, some then prefer to ask on the internet annonymously to avoid be cited by the society. So, you are correct, even if the pet has been ill for a few days still going to the vet is better than wasting time on the internet. It needs urgent attention.

My cat recently tore his nail out and I was concerned because of infection maybe setting in, however, when I contacted the vet she told me to use polysporin triple protection and watch it for a couple of days and that if it didn’t get better to bring him in. In the meantime I posted my question and received some very good answers and a few not so good answers. I did not mention that I had spoken to the vet and you can tell there are some really neurotic people out there!!!!

Because many people do not know where that line is drawn between do it at home and vet. Because it is a pet, many people do not have the extra cash to spend, or think it is not as important as a sick child. Dogging people will not make them wake up any faster either. The only thing we can do is tell them “take it to the vet” and hope they do. Keep in mind, a lot of the questions here are posed by kids, and they just don’t know.

Oh this is a sore spot for me! I was watching Animal Cops Miami last night and the attitudes that some people have towards pets just baffle me. Why do they even get them? A lot of folks in general get in over their heads when they get a pet. They see cute and cuddly. They do not realize the expense and the responsibility, not to mention the moral obligation you have to a pet to care for it properly and humanely. Also, I read questions from many people who are quick to spend several hundred dollars on a purebred accessory dog, probably buy it sweaters, but there’s no money for vaccinations or deworming. Yes, vet care is expensive but there are people asking questions here that really do not seem to explore any options when they have a sick pet. Yesterday I answered a question from a girl who said her dog had blood pouring out of it’s behind “like a hose” and it died. She wondered what had killed it. Why? If nothing else, each locality has a department of animal control. Typically, if you surrender the animal they will either treat it and place it up for adoption or euthanize it for free to help prevent the spread of disease and for humane reasons. At least give them animal a chance at survival or a dignified death if you really don’t have the means to do it yourself.

I couldn’t agree more! The world seems to be chock full of stupid people! Add to that laziness, ignorance, and being a tightwad, well there you go!
If you want to own a pet, follow all the rules for responsible pet ownership. Get the animal’s vaccinations, neutering or spaying, any recommended flea/tick an/or heartworm prevention. Keep the animal clean and comfortable. Make sure it has the proper amount of quality food, and plenty of clean water. Make sure you keep all things potentially harmful put away where you pets can’t get them. See to it your pet gets adequate exercise, quality play time, and all the love you have to offer. That’s the recipe for a happy, healthy pet. If this sounds like too much work or expense, get a pet rock!
Despite all this, accidents sometimes do happen. Occasional vomiting or diarrhea is usually no cause for concern. If your pet has eaten something it shouldn’t, or is vomiting repeatedly, violently, or there is blood present (ditto for bowel movements), it’s not rocket science to figure out something is wrong! If an artery is spurting, or a broken bone is protruding through the skin, gee, what should you do? Give me strength!!
When in doubt, just call a vet!! DUH! I’d rather pay for an office visit than have my pet die, any day!
I propose a poll! I would like to know how many people have had an animal die because they were too stupid to get off the computer and take it to the vet?

thats hard to answer because sertin people arent very bright and dont know what to do and somtimes people will just ask so they can get more advice to be sure that there pet stays in good health. but yes you are rite when people ask questions when it is obviose to take them to the vet.
